MF gave great performances both at the Point and at Vincent's Ear (Asheville on 4/18 - I didn't get the list for that show). Her music is even more emotional and gripping live. You forget that she's the only one on stage... that the guitar is the only instrument... or even that you're watching a show. It was simply mesmerising.

Another public thank-you to John Miller, for posting Melissa Ferrick's tour dates. I caught her tonight in Des Moines, at Java Joe's, which is a *tiny* venue - as the name suggests, it's a coffee house. The place was packed, and still, the crowd was 100-125 at most. And the show was $1.03. It was sponsored by a local radio station (of course, FM 103) It was a great show - just her on acoustic guitar - a beat-up Takamine with a hole in the soundboard that seemed to get bigger as the show progressed. But WOW, can she ever put out a big sound from that guitar. Her 90-minute set was taken mostly from Willing to Wait and the new demo tape that she's selling at the show, with one or two songs from Massive Blur. She also did the Shawn Colvin Girls-With-Guitars routine, which was very funny. And she mentioned the internet a few times, particularly when people were shouting out for her to play "Jesse's Girl", which was her final encore. If you get a chance to see her on this tour, do it! --Maggie

Swing Cafe (12/02/95)
There were no surprises last night. The bulk of the songs were from WTW, with a couple of acoustic versions of songs from her upcoming CD. Here's the setlist:
Swing Cafe (11/11/95)
Believe it or not, Atlantic Records has dropped Melissa. Apparently, AR did a little housecleaning last week, dropping several artists, including Melissa. I was talking with her after the show, and she mentioned it as "hot off the press." At first, I thought that she was pulling my leg, but I realized that she was dead serious. They are still moving ahead with their plans to record her next album, while looking around for a new label. Stay tuned on this one.
Other than that ---- Melissa "unplugged" last night, as expected, at the Swing Cafe. Like prior shows, she opened solo, with Marika joining in several songs later. The majority of songs were from W2W, with a couple from MB, and an acoustic version of "Asking For Love" from her upcoming CD (which she said they are about ready to record).
For those interested, here's the setlist:
Love Lounge (11/04/95)
Judging from what Allison wrote about the 10/12 Troub show, looks like Melissa, Marika and Mauro performed a similar show - just about the same setlist (just flipped the order of 2 songs), all electric and loud. Ironically, I had the same problems catching the song titles as Allison did. Unlike Allison, I'm not quite sure about this harder, electric sound. In general, I tend to prefer acoustic over electric, so it's one of those personal taste "things" (hey, we acoustic types got our turn with "Willing To Wait," so the electric rockers get the next album).
Performance wise, I agree with Allison's observations. It was great to watch Melissa/Marika/Maurio rock out. Funny, this sound brings out a different Melissa on stage. If you think she is intense/passionate on acoustic, you should see the energy level on electric. Marika was just awesome on bass - the look, the moves, the sound, etc. Couldn't see much of Mauro, though.
One final note: the "I Kissed A Girl"/"Blister In The Sun" combo at the end actually "works." When Allison mentioned it, I thought hhmmm. But after hearing it live, I actually liked it. Furthermore, at the start of "I Kissed A Girl", somebody (strongly) resembling and sounding like Jill Sobule jumped up on stage and joined in on vocals. Now, I'm totally hedging, because I don't want to make a fool out of myself by saying that it *was* Jill, only to be corrected down the line with something else. Afterall, Halloween was just a few days ago. If it was her, cool/great idea/how did Melissa pull that one off/it was amusing watching Melissa ask Jill is she knew the song. If not, funny idea/great concept/I need a visual-audio tuneup.
Here's the setlist:
The Troubadour (10/12/95)
Thanks to Christine H (christine_hechler@SMTPGATE.TAIS.COM) for this setlist. and Allison (edgy@netcom.com) for the review
Melissa "burned her folk instruments" at the Troubadour tonight. And the result was truly spectacular. I've never seen such a good performance out of her. Totally plugged in--there were pedals and snares a-flyin'...Marika was rawkin out on bass and a drummer was there. Only three songs total from W2W and MB. An incredibly plugged in and vicious "Breaking Vows." About six new songs. Everything electric. Oh, and the encore was Jill Sobule's "I Kissed a Girl" (punked out) which segued into Violent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun." All in all, an absolutely great performance and I cannot wait for this album. The electric sound really suits her, I believe. Grrrl Jam! There's a kind of dreamy veracity to the new sound, if that makes any sense.
Oh, and dammit, Marika was just really hot. Wow.
Here's the set list for all y'all who care...
Tower Records (10/11/95)
Tonight, Melissa and Marika were playing at Tower Record's release party for the Out Loud CD. All the songs were from W2W, except the first one, which was from Out Loud. The set was short, but Melissa really rocked through the songs - the vocals were coming in loud and clear this time; the crowd seemed to be having a good time. Yup, it was one of those "you've got to see her live" nights, but she did have trouble with her hair getting caught up in the mike! Again, she mentioned that her next CD would be hard rock, all electric (complete with pedals - watch out), and that acoustic fans might be disappointed. I guess that we will have to wait for the new CD for the final say.
After Melissa's set, the Gretchen Phillips Experience played, but the experience was a little too much for us, so we left. For you Two Nice Girls fans, be prepared, for her new band has quite a different sound. It shocked me. It was loouuuddd.
Finally, we were subjected to some serious advertising/merchandising. Tower Records had a stage setup, with the big Tower Records logo in the background, Melissa's name next to it. And of course, the vodka sponsor's huge bottle was to the side of the stage. Tower Record employees were passing around free bags of something; there were pins and keychains, ballons...I bought the Indigo Girls new 1200 Curfew CD. oops. Walked right out of the store and right by Melissa with the CD in my hand. oops. Hey, I had already bought Out Loud.
Here's the setlist:
Swing Cafe (10/07/95)
For this round at the Swing Cafe, MF brought along her bass player (Marika), and both played for the entire set, with MF on acoustic the entire time (no broken strings).
Swing Cafe (09/02/95)
All acoustic, just Melissa and her (new) guitar. She was more chatty than usual, had no broken strings (although she made it sound like she did at the end of "The Juliana Hatfield Song") and is "working on keeping her eyes open."
Love Lounge (08/26/95)
Quick and dirty set list:
Troubadour (07/17/95)
Yet another quick and dirty set list:
The Fez (06/28/95)
Thanks to Jo K (JKAY1@VAXC.HOFSTRA.EDU) for this setlist.
Melissa week is over! :(. Set list from FEZ last night...
The only songs she played last time that she missed this time were "Hello Dad" and "Love Song", I think. But the show started late, and I think she was pressed for time.
But that's not to say she didn't have time to shake my hand and sign the set list I stole off the stage at the end of the show! It says, "Jo -- Thanks for coming out to my show... The Fez 6/28/95 (heart) Melissa Ferrick". It was great.
I did manage to bring my camera (thanks for the tip, Carolyn!) and got some great shots.
The club was much less crowded than on June 5th. Don't know why.
She also broke a guitar string during "Juliana", but couldn't rip it off to throw into the crowd!
During "Juliana", Melissa said Jill Sobule is her favorite Atlantic recording artist and sang a few seconds of "I Kissed a Girl" with extra lyrics like "I Kissed Jill Sobule -- I love Jill Sobule" -- and when the show started she mentioned she saw Jill Sobule & Billy Bragg the night before at the Bottom Line (which I missed 'cause of Melissa Etheridge, though no complaints here!)
All in all, Melissa (Ferrick.... well, *both*, really) is amazing!! She said she may be back at Fez on July 19th to play with Lisa Germano and Frances Dunnery.... anyone know anything about this?
So now I'm back at work after two nights of getting home at 2am... but it was well worth it! I will *never* pass up either Melissa! EVER!
Old Vienna Kaffeehouse (06/10/95)

Music Midtown (05/12/95)
Thanks to Tricia (n9243170@HENSON.CC.WWUEDU) for this setlist.
ok, so my review is a week late, but I finally have the time. I saw MF last week in Atlanta at the Music Midtown. She was suppose to play on this huge stage and 15 min before she was suppose to go on they told her that she would be playing a a different, and much smaller stage. They didn't let the audience know about it until she had already gone on. So I ran around the damn festival trying to find the stage. Finally found it, though I missed the first 2 songs. I think this is what she played:
It was a very intimate setting. It looked like both her and Marika were having a great time. There was this totally drunk guy up front shouting out requests. He was pretty funny. Though the set was short it was great to finally see her after a whole year. Melissa and Marika are both very nice and very cool people. It looks like they'll be back to Atlanta to play at Eddie's Attic sometime in June. Can't wait!
Fox Theatre (05/05/95)

The quick and dirty set list:
That's it, my friends are here so I gotta go... one last thing, Mary "the Saint" was too cool, she comp'd me and Kim some VIP passes to the Loft. It was great! I got to meet Nanci Bennett... and we talked about setting up a Web page... so keep your fingers crossed.
